For years, SEO practitioners have operated on a relatively simple mental model: build links, optimise pages, rank higher.
It is a model that worked well enough for long enough that it became doctrine. But a closer look at Google’s own patent filings – specifically the Site Quality Score patent – reveals that the algorithm has been moving toward something more nuanced for quite some time. In 2026, that shift has become impossible to ignore.

Google’s Site Quality Score patent describes a method for evaluating the quality of a website based on signals that have nothing to do with traditional on-page optimisation. The score is calculated using three primary inputs: how often users search for a website by name, how often users select that website even when it is not the top result, and how frequently the brand name appears in anchor text across the web.
Understanding that Google measures brand signal through these three inputs makes it possible to work toward them deliberately, rather than hoping they accumulate as a side effect of other activity.
Branded search volume is driven by anything that puts your business name in front of people who then go to Google to find out more. Media coverage, podcast appearances, industry events, referrals, and word of mouth all generate this signal. The goal is not direct traffic from these activities – it is the branded searches that follow when someone hears your name and wants to learn more.
An analysis of anchor text profiles across competitive Australian SEO queries – published by SEO Agency SG – found that the top-ranking sites had brand-anchored referring domains as their single largest anchor category, often representing more than 50% of their total profile. Keyword anchors were secondary. The composition, not just the volume, was the differentiating factor.

Traditional link building advice focuses on acquiring links from high-authority domains with relevant anchor text targeting commercial keywords. That advice is not wrong, but it is incomplete in a way that is now consequential.
The Site Quality Score patent reveals that the type of anchor text pointing to your website matters in a different way than most practitioners have assumed. A link with the anchor text “SEO agency” tells Google that someone is using your website as a keyword destination. A link with the anchor text “Safari Digital” tells Google that someone knows your brand by name and is referencing it specifically. The second signal feeds directly into site quality score. The first does not.
This has a compounding effect that takes time to understand. Businesses that have spent years accumulating keyword-anchored links may have built impressive link profiles that do not translate into the brand recognition signals Google’s quality score is actually measuring.
One of the more significant findings from researchers who have examined Google’s ranking infrastructure is that site quality score appears to operate as a threshold mechanism rather than a linear ranking input. Below a certain score, websites are simply not eligible for certain types of results – featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, and top positions for competitive queries – regardless of how well-optimised their pages are.
This explains a frustrating pattern that many business owners and marketers have experienced: putting significant effort into content quality and technical SEO without seeing movement on competitive keywords. The problem may not be the content or the technical setup. The problem may be that the site has not yet accumulated enough brand signal to cross the threshold that makes it eligible to compete at that level.
It is the equivalent of qualifying for a race before you can run it. All the training in the world does not help if you have not met the qualifying standard.

The businesses that are outperforming classical SEO metrics in 2026 – ranking above sites with more links, older domains, and higher authority scores – tend to have one thing in common. They have built brand recognition that shows up in Google’s quality signals before they have built the traditional SEO profile that practitioners use to predict rankings.
This is not an argument against technical SEO or content investment. Both remain necessary. But they function as the floor of a competitive campaign, not the ceiling. The ceiling is now determined by brand signal accumulation, and the path to that ceiling runs through genuine recognition rather than algorithmic optimisation.
For businesses taking a long-term view of their search visibility, the implication is straightforward. The activities that generate branded search, earn brand-anchored references, and drive click selection – even from imperfect positions – are now SEO activities, whether or not they have traditionally been labelled as such.
