Being able to work from a café, hotel lobby, airport lounge, or coworking space can be one of the simplest ways for a freelance designer to interrupt the daily routine. All one needs is a laptop, headphones, an appropriate table, and a reliable internet connection to complete some work.
However, working using public networks has its disadvantages.
Being a freelance designer means that there are more things at stake than ordinary web browsing. A freelance designer’s laptop contains unreleased ideas about branding, presentations for clients, agreements, source files, passwords, cloud storage access, payment information, and conversations. In case the connection or a laptop gets compromised, it will cause more trouble than a lost afternoon of work.
Luckily, it is not necessary to become a cybersecurity specialist to minimize the risks. It is enough to develop a few simple practices that will allow one to protect a Mac from threats along with security tools that modern computers are equipped with.
Here is how freelance designers can protect their devices, client files, accounts, and online activity while working away from home in 2026.

The first thing is simple: do not take a Wi-Fi network to be safe only because it belongs to a reputable café, hotel, or coworking space.
Modern public Wi-Fi is relatively safe because most websites and applications use encryption nowadays. According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), public Wi-Fi is safe enough if websites use HTTPS; however, users need to take some sensible precautions.
There is another problem: a user may connect to a network they do not expect.
One can create a network with a name that looks similar to the real café network and wait for customers to connect to it. Before joining the network, one should double-check its name with staff members.
This practice is particularly useful in places where a large number of users connect, for example, airports, hotels, conferences, or large coworking spaces. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) recommends confirming the name of the network and connection procedures with the venue staff.
One should also avoid connecting to the network automatically. It is useful to review networks a Mac remembers and remove networks that are no longer needed.
A public network is not the best place to find out that an operating system was outdated for several months.
It is recommended to install macOS updates before working for a long time away from home. Modern versions of macOS allow Apple to perform automatic background security updates, security configuration updates, and system data updates of the OS. Keeping them enabled allows a Mac to stay updated without a need to check each update manually.
One should also update applications used for work. They include a browser, design software, password manager, communication applications, cloud storage client, and any remote access software.
If possible, one should update the operating system and the applications while using the trusted home or office connection and not an unfamiliar public hotspot.

Using a virtual private network (VPN) as an additional layer of protection can be useful when connecting to a network one does not control. The use of a VPN creates an encrypted connection between a Mac and the service which is used, making it more difficult for people in the local network to spy on the traffic.
In particular, one needs to use a virtual private network when uploading design files, accessing a client’s private dashboard, using cloud storage, or dealing with an internal business system. CISA recommends using a VPN or another authorized secure access solution while connecting to a public network, especially while working with sensitive information.
It is important to know that a VPN is not a magic security button. It cannot protect you from phishing websites, malicious downloads, weak passwords, compromised accounts, or accidental sharing of private client folders.
For freelance work, one needs to view a VPN as a layer in a bigger security setup and not the whole security strategy.
Working from cafés or coworking spaces often requires using a particular VPN on Macs.
A freelance designer needs to select a reputable company providing services to Macs using modern encryption protocols, having a clear privacy policy, offering auto-connect options, and providing a kill switch. A kill switch can be useful in case of the connection falling unexpectedly.
A designer should also use a VPN application that is easy to use. If establishing a connection to a network takes several steps every time one comes to a café, one will probably turn off this option.
For designers working only on Apple devices, finding suitable VPNs for Mac can be helpful in narrowing down potential providers.
Before opening files of the client, one needs to connect to the chosen network and check if the connection has been established successfully. If an employer or client provides their own VPN or secure remote access system, one should use it instead of choosing a personal service.
It is important to note that HTTPS remains important even when a virtual private network is being used. Both tools work for different parts of a connection and cannot be viewed as alternatives to each other. The FTC recommends checking for HTTPS when entering sensitive information online.
Modern Macs already have a firewall allowing them to control unwanted network connections. There are firewall controls in macOS which can be useful for blocking any unwanted connections.
It is recommended to check firewall settings before spending a week working from public networks.
The corresponding controls can be found in System Settings > Network > Firewall in recent versions of macOS. The particular options can depend on the macOS version and management of a Mac.
There is almost no reason for a freelance designer to open services which are not needed to an unfamiliar network. If file sharing, remote access, or other services were activated for a certain project, one should reconsider the necessity of them while working in a public place.

Modern Macs offer a useful tool called Private Wi-Fi Address.
Wi-Fi networks usually identify a user’s device using its MAC address. Private Wi-Fi addresses were introduced by Apple to limit the ability of network operators and other parties to track the same device through different networks. In recent versions of macOS, one can set Off, Fixed, or Rotating options for each network.
Enabling private addresses for public Wi-Fi is generally a sensible decision unless there are compatibility reasons to disable them.
It is possible to view the corresponding setting in System Settings > Wi-Fi > selected network details.
This will not prevent anyone from viewing that a device is connected to a network; however, it can limit unnecessary tracking through different networks.
Security of the network is not the only issue. The laptop of a freelance designer contains the results of years of work, and losing the device can be as dangerous as connecting to a malicious network.
One should use full-disk encryption and a strong password for logging into the system. FileVault is used for encrypting the startup disk in modern Macs. This way, any information saved on the Mac will be protected if the computer is lost or stolen. FileVault is supported in current Macs by Apple, including modern Apple silicon Macs.
One should also avoid leaving the Mac unlocked when going for a cup of coffee.
It is better to configure the Mac so that it will require authentication in case of inactivity for a particular period of time and lock the Mac manually if it is left unattended. In case of working in a busy public place, it is important to think about the angle of the computer monitor. Someone seated behind the user can easily look at confidential client data without even touching the computer.
Freelancers usually have many accounts: email, cloud storage, project management platforms, social media, payment services, design tools, and client-specific systems.
Creating unique passwords for each important account limits the damage caused by a compromised password. Password managers make this practice easier because one does not have to memorize passwords for each account.
Activating multi-factor authentication wherever it is possible is especially important for email, cloud storage, financial accounts, and access to client projects. The FTC recommends using strong passwords and two-factor authentication as the basic protection for online accounts.
Email accounts need special attention. In case the account is compromised, it is possible to reset passwords for other services too.

A secure Wi-Fi connection does not mean that everything in this network is safe.
An attacker can create a credible login page for popular services and send it to the user via emails, messages, advertisements, or fake support requests. A website can also use HTTPS and still be a fraudulent website. The FTC explicitly warns that scammers can create an encrypted website. Therefore, it is impossible to rely only on HTTPS to know that a website is credible.
In case of working with important services, it is better to use bookmarks or type the address manually instead of following links.
One should be especially careful with files which are downloaded through emails and messaging applications. A client requesting a user to download a new “invoice,” “brief,” or “project viewer” should not be taken for granted.
Sometimes the best Wi-Fi connection can be no Wi-Fi connection at all.
In case there is a need to deal with sensitive data and the connection looks suspicious, one can use a phone’s mobile hotspot if the data plan allows. In this way, one will have more control over the connection compared to the network used by dozens of strangers.
It can also be useful as a backup when the connection of the café becomes unreliable in the middle of uploading.
One should note that cellular connections are not risk-free. One will still have to use HTTPS, update devices, protect accounts, and avoid downloading files from unknown sources. The advantage is that one avoids an insecure network infrastructure.
Security is not only about protecting the device. It is also about backing up in case something happens.
Important projects should have more than one location. It is possible to have a combination of reputable cloud storage and backup of the work to protect the design from hardware failure, accidental deletion, ransomware, or theft.
In case of active client projects, one should consider maintaining the folder structure and version history. If something goes wrong with the newest version, it should be possible to restore the previous version without having to start working from scratch.
It is important not to keep the only copy of an important deliverable on the laptop.
One does not need to create a complicated checklist every time the laptop is opened. A short routine is enough:

Public Wi-Fi is not something that freelance designers should be afraid of. However, it should be considered an environment which requires a bit of extra caution.
The main threats usually come from a combination of factors: connecting to the fake or insecure network, using outdated software, having unprotected accounts, downloading suspicious files, or having unprotected client information on the laptop.
Modern Macs provide many useful security features which one can use to protect the device: automatic security updates, a built-in firewall, private Wi-Fi addresses, and FileVault encryption. Combining the described protections with strong passwords, multi-factor authentication, sensible backups, HTTPS, and a reputable virtual private network, one can safely work from cafés, hotels, coworking spaces, and other public places.
The main idea is not to complicate remote work. It is about creating a few habits before the next client deadline.
