You’ve just bought an office for your business. You want to make it the best space for you (and maybe your team, if you have one) to be productive. You’re going to design it to reflect your brand and your principles, fill it with color, and make sure it’s a workplace you can be proud of.
You’ll also need to make sure it’s secure and safe as well. There are various security issues that can occur when you’re just moving in and getting set up, and many small business owners forget this. And that’s totally natural, as the main focus is on creating a beneficial workspace!
So to make sure your investment stays safe and valuable, here are three common security issues you should be both aware of and ready to safeguard against.

Even if you don’t directly sell anything, as you’re not a retail store, you can still suffer from inventory loss and wastage. This happens when things go missing, or get broken or reach the end of their shelf life, before you have the chance to use them.
And while it may not sound like much of a security issue, there’s a chance that your inventory could be being stolen from right under your nose.
There’s no need to go on a hunt for a culprit here. Just simply be aware that this may occur, and that you’ll need to use an inventory tracking system to clamp down on these behaviors.

Who has access to your new office? You do, of course. If you have a PA, they’re likely to as well. If you have any staff, whether senior or junior, they’re going to be able to come inside without much problem either.
But what’s preventing a total stranger from just waltzing in, if they feel like it? This is an important thing to consider if your office is in a downtown area, where unauthorised access is more likely to occur.
Use signage to make it clear who is and isn’t allowed through certain entryways, and use access control systems on vital entry points to make sure you can lock down at a moment’s notice.
Company equipment like work phones, tablets, and laptops, should be used for work purposes only.
However, many people push the boundaries a bit here. Usually this isn’t too much of a problem, but once again you’ll need to keep track of how your assets are being used when you’re not looking.
Track the physical location of these items, in case they get lost, and be sure to keep an eye on user behaviour. This includes internet search history and downloaded apps.

When you’re new to owning an office, security issues can get on top of you. Crack down on them from the get go with tips like those above. Your office needs to be a nice place to work, but setting clear expectations and boundaries is key.
